For the 18th editing of the Playtime festival in Mongolia Sara Orfali aka ALPHAWHALE and Maarten van der Glas participated in 3 days of VJing at the TechnoStage. Part of the programming was under auspices of TodaysArt in collaboration with Art Counsel Mongolia.

Sara had made a design of a constellation of triangular screens. We video-mapped those screens and mixed our visuals onto them.

Sara was very interested in Voronoi structures for projections and Maarten was experimenting with feedback loop and so called data moshing techniques.

We were very pleased with the result, the DJ’s and the crowd. It was a very special experience at an amazing festival at an awesome location.

International Media Arts Festival 2019 Ulaanbaatar https://maartenvanderglas.com/project_list/ulaanbaatar-international-media-arts-festival/ Wed, 21 Aug 2019 15:55:49 +0000 http://maartenvanderglas.com/?post_type=project&p=211 ]]>

For the Ulaanbaatar International Media Arts Festival (IMAF) Maarten van der Glas and Sara Orfali were invited to realise the opening act for the festival. The opening act comprised of a live surround video projection in the Dinosaur Museum of Ulanbataar, live motion tracking of a dancer and special video effects. Maarten van der Glas developed a custom rendering system and tracking system.

Arts Counsel Mongolia initiated the UIMAF in 2016 with the commitment to facilitate innovation, collaboration, strategic growth and cultural impact for the media arts in Mongolia.

The 4th edition of UBIMAF reflects on the theme of migration. Global events over the last decade make this an apt topic for artistic engagement.

The festival opening will take place at the Central Museum of Dinosaurs on June 27, 2019 with experimental performance “Arrival” a joint work by Mongolian, Dutch and German artists.

GREETING FROM THE GOETHE-INSTITUT

In an open, multilateral curatorial process, the Goethe-Institutes from 9 countries in East and Southeast Asia brought together curators from Mongolia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore to examine the relationship between art and migration.

The first of these exhibitions is the Ulaanbaatar International Media Art Festival.

MIGRATION IN MONGOLIA

UBIMAF reflects on the theme of migration. Global events over the last decade make this an apt topic for artistic and scholarly engagement. In 2019 the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimated that there are 68.5 million forcibly displaced people worldwide.

Given the themes of UBMAF, it is appropriate that this festival is held in Ulaanbaatar: a city whose population has rapidly increased over the last thirty years under the influence of significant internal migration.

In a Flickering Light https://maartenvanderglas.com/project_list/in-a-flickering-light/ Wed, 21 Aug 2019 15:25:34 +0000 http://maartenvanderglas.com/?post_type=project&p=195 ]]> In a Flickering Light

Performance, 30 minutes, 2019

Maarten van der Glas: light art, software development

For this piece Maarten van der Glas developed 4 fake TV screens that were emitting light for all of the cast and stage. The screens were lighting up according to film segments selected by Sander Breure and Witte van Hulzen, giving the characters a distinct TV glow and a hidden layer for the piece.

In a Flickering Light, the performance by artist duo Sander Breure and Witte van Hulzen, has five characters: four actors, and the light of a screen. The light of the screen–of which the audience sees only the reflection–makes the muscles of the four actors react, contract and contort. Their faces smile, get scared, cry and admire. The facial expressions of the faces lit by the screen change from mask to mask. Are these masks a reaction to what they see on the screen? Or are they a ritualised expression of their feelings? They could also be read as an exposé of a canon of facial expressions, reminiscent of the series of frozen grimaces that Franz Xaver Messerschmidt sculpted between 1770 and 1783. At the end of his life, he obsessively studied himself in the mirror–like a kind of Narcissus–creating self portraits possessed by a spirit that visited him at night. All faces, if we do an exercise in abstraction and see them on a close-up, become masks. Masks evoke the Jungian archetypes, such as those Grotowski worked with in his “Poor Theater,” searching for the expression of a sharpened consciousness.

For the band DIEDE “Made in China” tour Maarten van der Glas was commissioned to make a system that allowed 4 video screens to move on stage. During the set the screen were moved on stage to provide a suiting atmosphere.

The screens were in sync with the live audio set, mobile on stage and could be controlled with a controller on stage during the performance. My rol was to make a link between the Ableton Live audio set and the synced videos on screen, and program a controller for on the stage.

As rereach in the medium of video art / projection it is also an investigation in a way to use a projector as a projector of light instead as a projector of images. By using different media the light is reflected on (smoke and plastic) light can be seem in space where it is normally hidden.

“Embarking on a journey through corporeal realms, ‘Into another body’ emerges as an enthralling dance opus intertwined with the ethereal tapestry of electronic music and video projection. Within this immersive experience, the dance, music, and visuals engage in a mesmerizing live dialogue, giving rise to a kaleidoscope of choreographic expressions. This avant-garde project delves deep into the intersection of dance and technology, weaving a narrative that transcends conventional boundaries. Harnessing the kinetic energy of the Kinect motion-tracking device, we delve into the intricacies of enlivening the human form upon a projected canvas. The result is a captivating interactive dance installation and a spellbinding performance, an exquisite interplay among personas that beckons the audience to traverse the threshold of artistic innovation.”
